Final Score: Honduras 1 Obama 0

Faced with the utter failure of yet another of his boneheaded, anti-American ally, foreign policy decisions, Obama finally gives up, waves his ever handy white flag, and surrenders to the good guys’ rule of law in Honduras.

Honduras: Obama administration finally and completely abandons Zelaya

The Obama administration’s wishy-washy attitude toward Honduran elections finally lands him on the right side of the issue: in favor of Honduras and its democracy, and against ousted President Manuel Zelaya, who was thrown out after attempting to extend his reign illegally.

The United States says it supports Sunday’s presidential election in Honduras as an “essential” part of a solution to that country’s ongoing political crisis.

State Department spokesman Ian Kelly says the U.S. thinks it is important that the people of Honduras have the opportunity to “express their votes in a free and transparent way.”

…Spokesman Kelly noted that the election, in which neither [Interim President Roberto] Micheletti nor Mr. Zelaya is running, is being organized by an electoral tribunal that was selected and installed in a transparent, democratic process before the coup. He said it is important the election be seen as free, fair and transparent, and is monitored by a credible international monitoring process.

After an Obama knee-jerk reaction to Zelaya’s ouster in June, the U.S. had insisted on Zelaya’s reinstatement. This would have harmed Honduras’s Congress and high court, which had ousted Zelaya, even as it served no discernible U.S. interest. At the same time, Zelaya’s continuation in power would have benefited one of Zelaya’s main allies and alleged sources of funding — Venezuelan strongman Hugo Chavez.

By hanging Zelaya out to dry — leaving him powerless and languishing in the Brazilian Embassy in Tegucigalpa, possibly facing trial for illegally seeking re-election — the administration saves face in Honduras and ultimately does the right thing. The Honduran Congress will vote on Dec. 2, after the next president has been elected, whether to reinstate Zelaya as a lame duck, and with the election already decided, they won’t be under any pressure to do so and reverse their earlier decision.

So all’s well that ends well. But even so, as we recently opined, a happy ending is still no excuse for Obama’s half-cocked diplomacy, and no number of low bows to Honduras’s next president will make up for the damage he has caused there. Again, his legendary inexperience in world matters shows.

It Ain’t Over ‘Til It’s Over

Zelaya negotiator says Honduras talks reach deal

Negotiators on Wednesday reached a deal that may resolve a crisis in Honduras sparked by a coup three months ago, but the agreement needs to be approved by ousted President Manuel Zelaya and de facto leader Roberto Micheletti, Zelaya’s lead negotiator, Victor Meza, told reporters.

End to Honduras crisis? Not so fast, negotiator says

A negotiator for de facto Honduran President Roberto Micheletti said that no deal was reached between the two opposed sides Wednesday, as other government officials had reported.

Ninety percent of an agreement to end the country’s ongoing political crisis has been reached, Micheletti negotiator Vilma Morales said at a news conference Wednesday, but some key points remained to be worked out.

Seeing as how his removal was legal and Honduran elections are scheduled for next month anyway, I’m not sure why there are even negotiations to reinstate Zelaya, except to placate the Obama administration’s bizzare threat not to recognize the elections. That’s right, the United States won’t recognize the constitutionally scheduled Honduran elections unless the Honduran government bends over for Obama’s State department and negotiates with the legally removed socialist, anti-semitic Hugo Chavez wannabe.

/as far as I’m concerned, they should just let his paranoid ass rot in the Brazilian embassy

Our Man In Tegucigalpa Is A Raving Lunatic

Whoopsies, someone better tell Hillary and Obama that their man in Tegucigalpa is a crazed, paranoid, anti-Semitic common commie criminal.

They’re torturing me, Honduras’ Manuel Zelaya claims

It’s been 89 days since Manuel Zelaya was booted from power. He’s sleeping on chairs, and he claims his throat is sore from toxic gases and “Israeli mercenaries” are torturing him with high-frequency radiation.

“We are being threatened with death,” he said in an interview with The Miami Herald, adding that mercenaries were likely to storm the embassy where he has been holed up since Monday and assassinate him.

. . .

Honduran police spokesman Orlin Cerrato said he knew nothing of any radiation devices being used against the former president.

“He says there are mercenaries against him? Using some kind of apparatus?” Cerrato said. “No, no, no, no. Sincerely: no. The only elements surrounding that embassy are police and military, and they have no such apparatus.”

. . .

Israeli government sources in Miami said they could not confirm the presence of any “Israelis mercenaries” in Honduras.

The evil Jews are torturing poor Zelaya with poson gas and radiation waves, they’re out to assasinate him! What a loon! And this is the crazy ass Chavez wannabe that the Obama administration has thrown in with. Oh, and remember that supposed “coup” the Obama administration is obsessed with punishing the Honduran government and people for? It turns out that it wasn’t a “coup” at all, under Honduran law, the removal of former President Zelaya was Constitutional.

CRS Report: Honduran ‘coup’ appears legit

In response to the ouster of Honduran President Manuel Zelaya, the U.S. State Department cut off foreign aid to Honduras and stopped approving visas for government officials. The U.S. is even threatening now to de-legitimize that nation’s upcoming November elections, and has been treating the interim government of Roberto Micheletti as a rogue regime.

But State’s is not the only opinion. By way of contrast, a new report (click here for the pdf) from the Congressional Research Service bears out what our editorial board has been pointing out for months now: The situation in Honduras should not be a cause for concern in Washington. It should a relief.

President Zelaya, who was attempting to subvert the constitutional order of Honduras by seeking re-election (considered a crime there) was removed from office by the order of civilian authorities, and the constitutional order of succession was honored afterward.

. . .
.
“The nonpartisan Congressional Research Service concluded the removal of former President Zelaya was Constitutional, and we must respect that,” Rep. Aaron Schock said today. “It’s unconscionable the administration would attempt to force Honduras to violate its own Constitution by cutting of foreign aid.”

Spinning Zelaya

To hear Hillary tell it, you’d think it was reminiscent of MacArthur’s triumphant return to the Philippines.

Clinton, Arias: Zelaya return could help end Honduras crisis

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Costa Rican President Oscar Arias said Monday that ousted leader Manuel Zelaya’s return to Honduras offers an opportunity to end the country’s political crisis.

“Now that President Zelaya is back it would be opportune to restore him to his position under appropriate circumstances, get on with the election that is currently scheduled for November, have a peaceful transition of presidential authority and get Honduras back to constitutional and democratic order,” Clinton told reporters as she met with Arias in New York.

Well, what Hillary didn’t say is that, although Zelaya sneaked across the border like a thief in the night, he’s technically still not back in Honduras, he’s hiding like a coward in the Brazilian embassy to avoid arrest.

Honduras under curfew as ousted president returns

Ousted President Manuel Zelaya sneaked back into Honduras on Monday almost three months after he was toppled in a coup, and took refuge in the Brazilian embassy to avoid arrest by the de facto government.

The move forced de facto leaders in Honduras to impose a 15-hour curfew according to an official announcement on local media.

. . .

Mr. Zelaya had been in exile mostly in Nicaragua while a de facto government that backed the coup against him became more entrenched in office, defying international calls to allow the leftist president to return.

But his sudden appearance in Honduras on Monday increased pressure on the country’s ruler Roberto Micheletti to cede power and increased the chance of violent protests or a standoff at the embassy

. . .

Micheletti, whose government is not recognized internationally, earlier on Monday vowed to have Zelaya detained.

“The moment that we know he has entered the country we are going to go ahead with his arrest. We have search and capture teams to carry out his arrest,” Micheletti told Reuters before news broke that Zelaya had taken refuge in the embassy.

Seeing as how Zelaya was lawfully removed from office by the Honduran high court, according to Honduran law, it’s still puzzling as to why the Obama administration has obsessively come down on the side of all the communist and socialist regimes in the region. Then again, after watching the Obama administration in action for over six months now, maybe it’s not really that puzzling after all.

/Zelaya can’t hide in the Brazilian embassy forever, as soon as he comes out the Honduran government should arrest him and throw his Chavez wannabe ass in jail
