Fighting Al Qaeda With Words On Paper And TV Talking Points

A true team effort at CYA damage control if there ever was one. Nine pages of PDF and a half hour of talking later . . . are we any safer?

Obama Orders Security Fix

President Barack Obama ordered his top intelligence chiefs Thursday to patch gaps in the way terrorism intelligence is distributed, analyzed and checked against watch lists used to identify potential attackers bound for the U.S.

It was his strongest and most detailed response to the Christmas Day attempt to blow up an airliner bound for Detroit. “We are at war,” the president said. “We are at war with al Qaeda.”

The White House also released details on how the alleged suspect, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, slipped through the intelligence net, used cash to purchase a one-way ticket and, carrying a bomb sewn into his underwear, boarded a Northwest Airlines flight with almost 300 passengers and crew.

A “series of human errors” included the “delayed dissemination of a finished intelligence report” that might have helped intelligence analysts connect the dots and prevent the attempted bombing, according to an unclassified version of the White House review of the attempted Christmas attack. The “finished report,” prepared by the Central Intelligence Agency, contained background on Mr. Abdulmutallab, officials said.

Personally, releasing nine pages of reports to the public and putting the Three Stooges on the TV to apologize and make excuses, while entertaining, doesn’t impress or reassure me and certainly does nothing to make Americans any safer. Until the government can actually keep terrorists off of commercial aircraft, it’ll still be primarily up to the flying public to stomp on the al Qaeda operatives when they try and explode their underwear. Talk is cheap, just do it.

/instead of wasting everybody’s time covering your ass with damage control on the TV, spend that time killing a few al Qaeda or at least trying to disrupt their networks and plots

Domestic Contingency Operation

Remember when the Obama administration replaced the phrase “global war on terror” with the ridiculously politically correct euphemism “overseas contingency operation”? Well, here’s a counterterrorism operation that could have occurred anywhere in Afghanistan or Iraq, but it didn’t, this counterterrorism operation (but don’t dare call it that) took place today in Dearborn, Michigan, USA.

Detroit mosque leader killed in FBI raids

The leader of a Detroit mosque who allegedly espoused violence and separatism was shot and killed Wednesday in an FBI gun battle at a Dearborn warehouse.

Luqman Ameen Abdullah, imam of the Masjid Al-Haqq mosque in Detroit, was being arrested on a raft of federal charges including conspiracy, receipt of stolen goods, and firearms offenses.

Charges were also filed against 11 of Abdullah’s followers. Eight were in custody Wednesday night awaiting detention hearings today; three remained at large.

A federal complaint filed Wednesday identified Abdullah, 53, also known as Christopher Thomas, as “a highly placed leader of a nationwide radical fundamentalist Sunni group.” His black Muslim group calls itself “Ummah,” or the brotherhood, and wants to establish a separate state within the United States governed by Sharia law, Interim U.S. Attorney Terrence Berg and Andrew Arena, FBI special agent in charge in Detroit, said in a joint statement.

“He regularly preaches anti-government and anti-law enforcement rhetoric,” an FBI agent wrote in an affidavit. “Abdullah and his followers have trained regularly in the use of firearms, and continue to train in martial arts and sword fighting.”

The Ummah is headed nationally by Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin, formerly known as H. Rap Brown, who is serving a state sentence for the murder of two police officers in Georgia.

Early Wednesday afternoon, FBI agents and local police from the Joint Terrorism Task Force surrounded a warehouse and trucking firm on Miller Road near Michigan Avenue where Abdullah and four of his followers were hiding, said Special Agent Sandra Berchtold, a spokeswoman for the FBI in Detroit.

When agents entered the warehouse, four of the men obeyed orders to surrender but Abdullah opened fire and was shot to death, Berchtold said. An FBI dog was also shot and killed, she said.

Through a 45-page complaint filed in the case alleges Abdullah “calls his followers to an offensive jihad” and preaches that every Muslim should “have a weapon and should not be scared to use their weapon when needed,” charges in the case to not include terrorism or national security crimes.

So, Abdullah and his nationwide group Ummah advocate violent “offensive jihad” against the United States to establish a separate state governed by Sharia law, they engage in active weapons acquisition and training and encourage every Muslim to have a weapon and be prepared to use it in furtherance of the jihad, and today he kills an FBI dog while shooting at law enforcement. Phew, I’m sure relieved that there was no no need to file terrorism or national security crime charges against anyone in this case. That might look like we’re acknowledging that we have some type of larger problem with Muslim jihadis within our own borders.

Thinking What Was Unthinkable Three Months Ago

Remember last Fall when we just had to bail out General Motors, when Chapter 11 bankruptcy was absolutely unthinkable because no one would buy a car from a bankrupt auto manufacturer, there’d be a “domino effect” of bankruptcies among suppliers, dealerships and other businesses that depend on GM’s spending, and the nation’s economy would lose millions of jobs?

Well, nevermind.

GM considering Chapter 11 filing, new company: report

General Motors Corp, nearing a Tuesday deadline to present a viability plan to the U.S. government, is considering as one option a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing that would create a new company, the Wall Street Journal said in its Saturday edition.

“One plan includes a Chapter 11 filing that would assemble all of GM’s viable assets, including some U.S. brands and international operations, into a new company,” the newspaper said. “The undesirable assets would be liquidated or sold under protection of a bankruptcy court. Contracts with bondholders, unions, dealers and suppliers would also be reworked.”

And why is GM considering bankruptcy? Because, of course, the United Auto Workers, the union that has pretty much single-handedly driven the entire Detroit auto industry into the ground, won’t play ball.

Report: UAW walks away from GM talks

Negotiators for the United Auto Workers walked out of concession talks with General Motors Corp. Friday night in a dispute over payments to a union-administered retiree health care fund, a person briefed on the talks said Saturday.
The breakdown comes at a critical time as GM races against a Tuesday deadline to submit a plan to the government showing how it can become viable.

. . .

At GM, UAW negotiators walked away because the company made demands that were “detrimental to retirees and the ability to provide health care,” according to the person, who asked not to be identified because the talks are private.

Seriously, is their any modern industrial union that hasn’t been detrimentally parasitic to the industry it leeches blood from?

/we’ve already wasted enough tens of billions of dollars on this three ring auto bailout circus, when GM comes begging at the taxpayer trough again next Tuesday, just say no, let GM declare Chapter 11 bankruptcy and reorganize, like they should have done in the first place last Fall, that’s what the bankruptcy laws are for
