Apocalypse Confirmed?

Believe it or not, the Mayans did.

End of the world speculation after new Mayan discovery

Archaeologists in Mexico have confirmed the discovery of a possible second Mayan reference to the date 2012, offering further ammunition for doom-mongers predicting an apocalypse next year.

Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History acknowledged the reference had been found in a 1,300-year-old inscription made on a carved brick fragment at a ruin at Comalcalco in the south of the country.

Most experts have previously cited only one surviving Mayan reference to the date, on a stone tablet from a nearby site at Tortuguero.

Mooky Rubs The U.S. Nose In The Iranian Victory In Iraq

After almost a decade in Iraq, after losing thousands of soldiers and spending hundreds of billions of dollars, the United States’ request to maintain even a minimal troop presence in Iraq after the end of 2011 was categorically rejected, in the end, effectively vetoed by close Iranian ally and long time U.S. nemesis, with plenty of U.S. blood on his hands, Muqtada al-Sadr. We got kicked out by Mooky, how absolutely humiliating is that?

Iraq’s Sadr calls for full US withdrawal

Head of Iraq’s Sadr movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, has called for the complete withdrawal of all American troops from the country by the end of the year.

Speaking in the holy city of Najaf on Wednesday, the cleric rejected any form of US presence in the country, as Washington and Baghdad are discussing keeping a limited number of US troops as military trainers in Iraq.

Sadr said the presence of US military trainers in Iraq beyond the Dec. 31 deadline is an ”organized occupation”.

He also dismissed any negotiation with the US before the full withdrawal of all foreign soldiers and the payment of compensation to the families of Iraqis killed by US troops.

Washington has been pressing Baghdad to agree to keep thousands of its troops beyond the 2011 deadline. It also wants the remaining troops to be granted immunity from prosecution.

Soldiers, Pundits Debate Whether Iraq War Was Worth It

If anyone tries to tell you that the U.S. pullout from Iraq, without a trace, after begging to stay and being curtly rebuffed, isn’t a huge victory for Iran, they’re either naive, confused, or lying. Iran will dominate Iraq, economically, militarily, politically, and socially after we’re gone. The majority of Iraq’s government is already aligned with Iran.

Does anyone seriously believe that a U.S. embassy, with less than 200 troops, has any chance of checking Iran’s influence in Iraq? Hell, we’ll be lucky if our embassy isn’t overrun. Iraq could very well become another Iranian satellite state, like Lebanon. And hey, you thought taking military action against Iran’s nuclear program was already difficult at best? Try it without any leverage over or military footprint in Iraq.

Partly Cloudy With A Chance Of Falling Satellites

Here we go again, this time it’s the German’s turn to randomly drop [expletive deleted] from orbit.

Falling German Satellite Poses 1-in-2,000 Risk of Striking Someone This Month

A big German satellite near the end of life is expected to plunge back to Earth this month, just weeks after a NASA satellite fell from orbit, and where this latest piece of space junk will hit is a mystery.

The 2.4-ton spacecraft, Germany’s Roentgen Satellite (ROSAT), is expected to fall Oct. 22 or 23.

The satellite will break up into fragments, some of which will disintegrate due to intense re-entry heat. But studies predict that about 1.6 tons of satellite leftovers could reach the Earth’s surface. That’s nearly half ROSAT’s entire mass.

There is a 1-in-2,000 chance that debris from the satellite could hit someone on Earth, though the likelihood of an injury is extremely remote, German space officials say. For German citizens, the risk of being struck is much lower, about 1 in 700,000.

All areas under the orbit of ROSAT, which extends to 53 degrees northern and southern latitude, could be in the strike zone of the satellite’s re-entry.

Farewell To The King

Nooooooooooo, say it ain’t so!

Burger King Kills Off King Mascot Commercials

Burger King has decided that putting a creepy plastic mask on a robe-wearing human body isn’t good for business. After declining sales, the world’s second largest hamburger chain has decided to end its advertising campaign featuring the King mascot and instead focus its advertising on the food itself, beginning this week with commercials for its newest avocado and cheese-bearing product.

Since advertising firm Crispin Porter + Bogusky began working with Burger King in 2003, the King has been at the forefront of their campaigns. In the “Wake Up With the King” series meant to sell the chain’s new breakfast sandwiches, for example, unwitting customers wake up to find the silent mascot lurking outside of their windows or next to them in bed. We’re guessing that the narrator’s raspy voice also didn’t help “appeal to [the] broader audience” Burger King spokesman Miguel Piedra says the brand wants to attract.

Okay, so The King was a little creepy, but the commercials were awesome, cult classics! At least he wasn’t boring like showing 30 seconds worth of retouched pictures of highly stylized food that looks absolutely nothing like the mangled, defective product you actually get in the store. Boo, the King will be missed.

/I mean, damn, first McDonalds wipes out Ronald McDonald and now Burger King kills off The King, what is the world of Big Burger coming to, how long will it be before Wendy’s takes Wendy out back and shoots her too?

Crazy Dayton Caves

Gee, apparently we can live within our means without raising taxes after all. The stupid part is that Governor Lunatic accepted the GOP proposal that they submitted before the shutdown even started. What a waste of two weeks. At least now, maybe Minnesotans will soon be able to legally fish and buy beer again.

Dayton Agrees to Republican Budget to End Minnesota Shutdown

Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton and Republican leaders went behind closed doors at 2 p.m. Thursday to discuss a budget proposal with additional conditions that could end the state government shutdown. The trio emerged shortly after 5 p.m. to announce a “framework agreement” has been reached.

The meeting began after the governor sent a letter Thursday morning to House Speaker Kurt Zellers and Senate Majority Leader Amy Koch, saying he “reluctantly” agrees to accept the Republican budget proposal from June 30 if it will end the government shutdown.

Of course, the Republicans didn’t get everything they wanted and they still ended up spending more than their budget limit. But what are you going to do when the Governor, who has mental health issues, is willing to shut down the entire state to satisfy his obsession with raising taxes? And we still have to deal with Crazy Dayton for another 2 1/2 years, lucky us.

Anyway, now that this unfortunate episode is almost behind us, we can move on to more important things, like getting a new Vikings stadium approved. And I swear, If Dayton gets in the way of a new stadium and we end up losing professional football in Minnesota . . . well, he’d better have a real good hiding place.

/and remember, in the land of what might have been, if it weren’t for asshole spoiler little Tom Horner, we would have had a Republican governor to go along with the Republican legislature and Minnesota’s fiscal house would already be in order, without all of Dayton’s drama queen bull[expletive deleted]

Partners In Peace

These are the lovely people Israel is supposed give up land to for peace.

Haniyeh on Nakba Day: Pray for an end to Israel

Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh spoke to Muslim worshipers on Sunday morning, telling them to pray for an end to Israel.

“Palestinians mark the Nakba with great hope of bringing to an end the Zionist project in Palestine,” Haniyeh told 10,000 people at Gaza City’s al-Omari mosque, AP reported.

“To achieve our goals in the liberation of our occupied land, we should have one leadership,” he reportedly said, praising the recent unity accord between Hamas and Fatah.

Haniyeh added that Hamas would not recognize Israel.

/Obama can make all the speeches he wants and demand that Israel do this or do that, but it’s all so much meaningless bull[expletive deleted] until Fatah and Hamas recognize Israel’s right to exist, which they’ve vowed never to do and there’s nothing Obama can, or will, do about it

Are We There Yet?

And so the end begins. You just knew this was bound to happen, given that there’s no actual strategy involved. Run away! Italy doesn’t want to play anymore.

Italy to try to seek date for end of Libya mission

Italy pledged on Tuesday to seek an end date for NATO’s Libya operations as Premier Silvio Berlusconi sought to placate a key government partner opposed to Italian participation in the bombing missions.

Foreign Minister Franco Frattini told reporters that Rome “will try, along with international organizations, and until, until I’m proven wrong, NATO, and its allies, to set an end” date for the operations.

How is it that it’s suddenly fashionable to start a war and then declare a time limit as to how long you’re willing to fight? Even a five year old can figure out that all the enemy has to do is to wait until you leave and then declare victory. Other than to waste lives and resources, what’s the point of starting a war you’re not going to finish?

/whatever happened to that old fashioned concept of, you know, fighting wars to win?
