Nation pauses to remember Pearl Harbor

Survivors of the surprise Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor gathered Wednesday to remember the 2,400 people who lost their lives exactly 70 years ago.

“Just as every day and unlike any other day, we stop and stand fast in memory of our heroes of Pearl Harbor and the Second World War,” Rear Adm. Frank Ponds, commander for Navy region Hawaii, told the gathering.

U.S. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus took note of the devastating legacy of the two-hour attack on Pearl Harbor 70 years ago.

“The history of December 7, 1941, is indelibly imprinted on the memory of every American who was alive that day. But it bears repeating on every anniversary, so that every subsequent generation will know what happened here today and never forget,” Mabus said.

A New League Leader

Japan puts China in the supercomputing back seat and, unlike China, Japan didn’t have to steal the technology to do it.

Japan’s ‘K Computer’ takes supercomputer crown

Japan’s K Computer, which can crunch more than 8 quadrillion calculations per second, is the top supercomputer, according to the Top 500 list of high-performance systems.

The K Computer, housed at the RIKEN Advanced Institute for Computational Science in Kobe, puts Japan back in the top spot for the first time since Nov. 2004.

. . .

Japan’s K Computer bumped the previous top dog—China’s Tianhe-1A supercomputer. The K Computer is built by Fujitsu and has 548,352 cores, or 68,544 SPARC64 VIIIfx CPUs with eight cores each. It’s also notable that the K Computer doesn’t use graphics processors or accelerators.

The Other Other Dark Meat

Seriously, who could possibly come up with the sudden inspiration for this and think it was a good idea in the first place? And who in their right mind would volunteer to taste test it? Sniff, sniff, what’s that smell?

Japan scientist synthesizes meat from human feces

Mitsuyuki Ikeda, a researcher from the Okayama Laboratory, has developed steaks based on proteins from human excrement. Tokyo Sewage approached the scientist because of an overabundance of sewage mud. They asked him to explore the possible uses of the sewage and Ikeda found that the mud contained a great deal of protein because of all the bacteria.

The researchers then extracted those proteins, combined them with a reaction enhancer and put it in an exploder which created the artificial steak. The “meat” is 63% proteins, 25% carbohydrates, 3% lipids and 9% minerals. The researchers color the poop meat red with food coloring and enhance the flavor with soy protein. Initial tests have people saying it even tastes like beef.

The Religion Of Man Caused Disasters

Nothing says Religion of Peace like plotting mass casualty attacks to randomly kill innocent people. But don’t worry, there is no global war on terror. Islam is a nonviolent religion, hijacked by just a few Muslim extremists for nefarious purposes. Jihad is a personal inner struggle of spirituality. Just remember, if you’re traveling in Europe and hear one or more peaceful people start shouting Allahu Akbar, don’t forget to duck.

Terror warning puts U.S. travelers overseas on alert

Few U.S. travelers say they’re canceling trips to Europe because of a new terror alert. But some say they’ll be on their guard.

The travel alert from the State Department on Sunday warns of possible acts of terrorism by al-Qaeda and other organizations, particularly on public transportation and at tourist attractions.

On Monday, Japan and Sweden issued similar advisories. And Britain has warned that France and Germany are dealing with a “high threat of terrorism.”

Can you just imagine what would happen if radical Christians started plotting and threatening to attack major cities in Muslim countries? Well, it’s never going to happen and besides, Muslims already carry out most of their deadly mass casualty attacks in their own countries and kill their fellow Muslims by the thousands.

/it’s a sad fact, not all Muslims are terrorists, but almost all terrorists are Muslim

When Countries Collide

China and Japan have a long history of animosity toward each other and the recent “boat collision incidents” in disputed waters are only inflaming age old territorial disagreements. Japan’s continuing arrest of the Chinese captain is further escalating this standoff by the day.

Japan-China island tensions rise

The ins and outs of the spat over a Chinese fishing boat captain

Tensions are growing daily over Japan’s arrest of a Chinese fishing boat captain following his ship’s collision with Japan Coast Guard vessels in the East China Sea.

Both countries have openly criticized each other over the incident, and the escalating diplomatic spat has led to public protests, the suspension of ministerial and higher-level exchanges, and the cancellation of a concert by pop group SMAP in Shanghai.

At the heart of the problem are a set of disputed islands in the East China Sea. Japan has administration of the islands, which it calls the Senkaku Islands, but both Beijing and Taiwan claim sovereignty as well, calling them the Diaoyu and Tiaoyutai, respectively. Following are basic questions and answers about the dispute:

Why was the Chinese captain arrested?

A JCG patrol vessel came across a Chinese fishing boat in Japanese-claimed territorial waters on the morning of Sept. 7.

After being warned to leave the area, the boat and JCG patrol ship Yonakuni collided. No details have yet been released as to who or what caused the collision. The Yonakuni then ordered the trawler to stop for inspection, which the Chinese captain refused, according to a JCG representative.

Later that morning, another JCG patrol ship, the Mizuki, was chasing the fishing boat to conduct an onboard inspection near Kuba Island when another collision occurred.

The Chinese captain, Zhan Qixiong, 41, was arrested the next day on suspicion of obstructing the public duties of coast guard personnel.

Japanese authorities are also looking into whether the captain engaged in unlawful fishing.

Remember this? China has a history of physical confrontations at sea over disputed waters, so I’d bet good money that this latest incident was deliberately instigated by the Chinese and therefore I blame them. Japan has every right to fully investigate the Chinese captain until they get this episode sorted out to their satisfaction.

/I seriously doubt that this knock down, drag out diplomatic kerfuffle will ever boil over into a military conflict, but if it does, my money’s on Japan, last time these two countries went at it hammer and tongs, it didn’t go well for China

The M Star Mystery Solved?

Who or what the [expletive deleted] dented Japan’s supertanker in the Strait of Hormuz?

We have a putative winner.

Tanker blast in Gulf ‘was terrorist attack’

A terrorist attack was behind an explosion last week that damaged a Japanese oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, the United Arab Emirates official news agency said on Friday.

More than a third of the world’s traded oil flows through the oil-rich Gulf’s strategic waterway that is bordered by Oman, the UAE and Iran, and a terrorist attack, if confirmed, will heighten security concerns in a region where tensions are already running high, analysts said.

Remains of homemade explosives were discovered on the M Star’s hull, as was a dent on the starboard side of the ship, a UAE coastguard source was quoted as saying by the Wam agency.

“Probably the tanker had encountered a terrorist attack from a boat loaded with explosives,” the source was quoted as saying. The investigation into the incident was conducted in the UAE’s Fujairah port.

The M Star, which is owned and operated by Japanese shipping company Mitsui OSK Lines, was damaged by what the crew said was an explosion after midnight on July 28, as it travelled through the strait on its way to a port near Tokyo. The tanker, which was loaded with 270,204 tons of oil, was able to continue under its own power to the UAE, with only one crew member slightly injured.

The Sun Is Angry

Don’t forget to duck.

Huge blasts of sun’s plasma hurtling toward Earth

A huge mass of magnetically charged material ejected from the sun is racing across space toward our planet, where it is expected to arrive on Tuesday. When it strikes the Earth’s magnetic field, it could produce spectacular auroras.

A blast of violent space weather could hit the Earth tomorrow following two massive explosions on the Sun. NASA astronomers witnessed a huge flare above a giant sunspot the size of our planet and linked to an even larger eruption across the surface of Sun.

Experts estimate a wave of supercharged gas called plasma will reach us this Tuesday when it will buffet the natural magnetic shield protecting Earth. It could trigger spectacular displays of the aurora or northern and southern lights.

The solar outbursts on Sunday August 1 were recorded by several satellites including NASA’s new Solar Dynamics Observatory which watched its shockwave rippling outwards. The flare over the sunspot was swiftly followed by an eruption 250,000 miles (400,000 km) away in a feature called a filament.

UK solar expert Dr Lucie Green, of the Mullard Space Science Laboratory, in Surrey, followed the flare-ups using Japan’s orbiting Hinode telescope.

She said last night: “What wonderful fireworks the Sun has been producing! This was a very rare event – not one, but two almost simultaneous eruptions from different locations on the sun were launched toward the Earth.

“These eruptions occur when immense magnetic structures in the solar atmosphere lose their stability and can no longer be held down by the sun’s huge gravitational pull. Just like a coiled spring suddenly being released, they erupt into space.

“It looks like the first eruption was so large that it changed the magnetic fields throughout half the Sun’s visible atmosphere and provided the right conditions for the second eruption. Both eruptions could be Earth-directed but may be travelling at different speeds. This means we have a very good chance of seeing major and prolonged effects, such as the northern lights at low latitudes.”

. . .

Scientists have warned that a really big solar eruption, like the Carrington Event witnessed from Surrey in 1859, could destroy satellites and wreck power and around the globe if it happened today.

Such an event would be the biggest disaster ever to hit mankind, preventing the production of essential supplies including food, water and medicines. Other eruptions have been observed directed towards us but thankfully less severe.
