Apocalypse Confirmed?

Believe it or not, the Mayans did.

End of the world speculation after new Mayan discovery

Archaeologists in Mexico have confirmed the discovery of a possible second Mayan reference to the date 2012, offering further ammunition for doom-mongers predicting an apocalypse next year.

Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History acknowledged the reference had been found in a 1,300-year-old inscription made on a carved brick fragment at a ruin at Comalcalco in the south of the country.

Most experts have previously cited only one surviving Mayan reference to the date, on a stone tablet from a nearby site at Tortuguero.

Postage Due

If you’re mailing your taxes on Monday, make sure there’s enough postage on the envelope.

US postage rates set for 1.7% increase from Sunday

The US Postal Service is set to raise its prices on some of its mail services for the first time in nearly two years.

The rate rises do not affect Express Mail or Priority Mail, and will leave a basic one-ounce First Class Mail letter costing 44-cents.

Most of the changes are for commercial mail categories, including for First Class Mail, Standard Mail, periodicals, package services and other services.

. . .

The major changes for retail customers will include a three-cent rise in First Class Mail additional ounces (to 20c per ounce), a one-cent rise for First Class Mail postcards (to 29c) with stamped postcards going up to 32c, and a rise for letters or postcards bound for Canada and Mexico to 80c.

Of course, even with this postage rate increase, the USPS will still run massive multi-billion dollar deficits every year.

This is why it’s important to keep your computer security up to date.

US Ranks First for Bot-Infected Computers and Spam Output

According to data gathered by Microsoft’s Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT), the United States had the highest number of computers infected with botnet malware, during the first half of 2010.

Botnet are armies of infected computers, which connect to remote command and control (C&C) servers and listen to instructions from attackers.

Botnets can serve a variety of criminal activities, but the largest ones are primarily used to send spam.

According to a recent report from Symantec, during the first half of the year, 90% of the daily spam traffic was generated by five to six million compromised computers.

In the latest edition of its Security Intelligence Report (SIR), Microsoft reveals that during Q2, MSRT has cleaned 2,148,169 bot infections from US computers.

That’s four times more than in the second country on the list, Brazil, with 511,002. Spain (485,603), Korea (422,663) and Mexico (364,554) complete the top five.

“Unsurprisingly, the list is dominated by populous locations with large numbers of computer users, led by the United States and Brazil,” says Microsoft.

However, there are at least two regions with large numbers of computers that do not dominate the list – China, which finished 8th, and Russia, 9th.

Mexican Pirates In Texas?

Welcome to Homeland Security in the age of Obama and Janet Napolitano.

Pirates plying the waves of Falcon Lake

Heavily armed Mexican freshwater pirates have been shaking down U.S. boaters on Falcon Lake, a reservoir and bass fishing haven that straddles the Rio Grande.
At least three such incidents have been reported since April 30, the latest on Sunday, according to a Texas Department of Public Safety warning issued Tuesday that linked the muggings to northern Mexico’s increasing lawlessness.

According to descriptions of the incidents, the robbers — in at least one case posing as Mexican federal law enforcement officers — searched fishermen’s boats for guns and drugs, then demanded cash at gunpoint.

One of the incidents reportedly occurred on the U.S. side of the lake.

“The robbers are believed to be members of a drug trafficking organization or members of an enforcer group linked to a drug trafficking organization who are … using AK-47s or AR-15 rifles to threaten their victims,” the DPS statement said. “They appear to be using local Mexican fishermen to operate the boats to get close to American fishermen.”

Oops, She Did It Again!

Fresh off Comrade Clinton’s Comedy Club Cackle Caper, Hillary stuck her foot in her mouth again. And, so far, the MSM is not even reporting on this gaffe.

Hillary Clinton leaves flowers for Our Lady of Guadalupe, asks ‘Who painted it?’

During her recent visit to Mexico, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made an unexpected stop at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe and left a bouquet of white flowers “on behalf of the American people,” after asking who painted the famous image.

The image of Our Lady of Guadalupe was miraculously imprinted by Mary on the tilma, or cloak, of St. Juan Diego in 1531. The image has numerous unexplainable phenomena, such as the appearance on Mary’s eyes of those present in the room when the tilma was opened and the image’s lack of decay.

Mrs. Clinton was received on Thursday at 8:15 a.m. by the rector of the Basilica, Msgr. Diego Monroy.

Msgr. Monroy took Mrs. Clinton to the famous image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, which had been previously lowered from its usual altar for the occasion.

After observing it for a while, Mrs. Clinton asked “who painted it?” to which Msgr. Monroy responded “God!”

Now, you may not believe in the miraculous origins of Our Lady of Guadalupe, but that’s not the point. Catholics believe in the divine origin of the image, especially the Catholic clergy curators of the Basilica of Guadalupe. Hillary Clinton was visiting perhaps Mexico’s most Holy Catholic shrine, to view perhaps Mexico’s most Holy religious relic. To ask “Who painted it?” was perhaps the ultimate in dumb and insensitive question. Again, if she’s that ignorant about the history of the places she visits on behalf of the United States, doesn’t the State Department have briefers that prepare her for these appearances in terms of background and protocol?

Found! Accused Scammer Stanford Turns in Passport in Washington

The billionaire banker accused of scamming $8 billion, R. Allen Stanford, was located by FBI officials today and served with civil papers by the SEC, putting an end to a nationwide search.

Stanford later turned in his passport to federal prosecutors, saying “he would not flee,” according to one of Stanford’s lobbyists, Ben Barnes.

Stanford was located in the Fredericksburg, Virginia area, the FBI said in a statement.

Damn right he turned himself in! As an exposed money launderer for the Gulf Cartel, he is almost surely contracted for death. Who’s scarier, the FBI or the most violent drug gang in Mexico?
