Open Season On Christians In Egypt

With Mubarak no longer in power to keep the social lid on, Egypt’s Muslim majority is doing what it does best, practicing their religion of peace and tolerance by attacking and killing Christians and burning down their churches.

Christians: Egypt allows attacks

Egypt’s Coptic church blasted authorities Monday for allowing repeated attacks on Christians with impunity as the death toll from a night of rioting rose to 26, most of them Christians staging a peaceful protest in Cairo over an attack on a church.

The spiritual leader of the Coptic Christian minority, Pope Shenouda III, declared three days of mourning, praying and fasting for the victims, starting today. He also presided over funerals for some of the Christians who were killed. Sunday’s sectarian violence was the worst in Egypt since the uprising that ousted President Hosni Mubarak in February.

The clashes Sunday night raged over a large section of downtown Cairo and drew in Christians, Muslims and security forces. The violence began when about 1,000 Christian protesters tried to stage a peaceful sit-in outside the government-run television building along the Nile in downtown Cairo. The protesters said they were attacked with sticks, and the violence then spiraled out of control after a speeding military vehicle jumped onto a sidewalk and hit some of the Christians.

There was no breakdown available of how many Christians and Muslims were among the victims, but the 26 are believed to be mostly Christian. Officials said at least three soldiers were among the dead. Nearly 500 people were injured. Egypt’s official news agency said dozens have been arrested.

Remember, Obama and Hillary Clinton publicly called for Mubarak’s ouster and hailed the Egyptian “revolution” as an exercise in free democracy. Well, how’s that working out?

/also notice that, now that Christians are being killed in the streets and their churches burned down, Obama and Clinton are silent and nowhere to be found regarding the ongoing persecution by Muslims

Education Out Of Control

Is it just me or does anyone else find it extremely disturbing that the U.S. Department of Education has their own heavily armed entry teams breaking down the doors of private residences and conducting S.W.A.T. style police raids?

Education Department S.W.A.T. team raids California home

A S.W.A.T. team with orders from the U.S. Department of Education broke into a California home at 6 a.m. Tuesday and reportedly roughed up a man because of a student aid issue involving his estranged wife. His wife was not present.

In 2010, the Post’s Valerie Strauss reported that the Education Department was purchasing 27 Remington Brand Model 870 police 12-gauge shotguns to replace old firearms used by Education’s Office of Inspector General, which is the law enforcement arm of the department. DoE said the guns were necessary to help enforce “waste, fraud, abuse, and other criminal activity involving Federal education funds, programs, and operations.”

Kenneth Wright says his house was raided because of his wife’s unpaid loans. One blogger speculated that we finally know what those guns are being used for.

But the Department of Education told Reason Magazine Wednesday that the SWAT team raided the house because of a criminal investigation, not a student loan.

You know, I don’t really care why a U.S. Department of Education S.W.A.T. team is breaking down doors and conducting raids. What I care about is that the U.S. Department of Education has a S.W.A.T. team and law enforcement arm in the first place. Seriously, what the hell, isn’t conducting raids and making arrests like this why we already have the FBI?

This is totally out of control and way beyond the pale, is this what legislators had in mind when they set up the Department of Education in 1979, military style police raids on private residences? The U.S. Department of Education is operating well beyond it’s original mandate. The DoE should be abolished, we’d save billions of dollars annually and it wouldn’t even be missed.

/when I graduated from high school, there was no Federal Department of Education and we all survived and made it through school just the same, and arguably with a better education too

Must Be Election Season

Oh, sure, it’s cheap political theater, but it’s the thought that counts and it’s got Democrats howling, so it serves its purpose.

In run-up to Nov. vote, GOP unveils ‘Pledge to America’

House Republican leaders vowed to reverse the course of Washington and “realign our country’s compass” in a wide-ranging agenda unveiled six weeks before the fall elections.

The 21-page “Pledge to America,” released Thursday at a Virginia hardware and lumber store, focused largely on government spending, the economy and ways to roll back ideas proposed by President Obama, including the new health care law.

“Government is out of control,” said House GOP leader John Boehner, sounding a theme repeated throughout the plan. “And we need to rein it in.”

An anti-Washington mood has endangered dozens of House Democrats this year, bolstering the GOP’s hopes that they can recapture the majority in the November elections. To do so, the party would need to win back 39 seats.

Democrats called the plan a retread: “The Republican agenda … will take us right back to the exact same agenda that failed middle-class families,” House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said.

Well, the “Pledge” certainly has provoked reactions from all sides, which I guess was the point. Whether you believe this is a serious document or a gimmick, it really doesn’t matter. Even if the Republicans take back the House and, by some miracle, manage to retake the Senate, as long as Obama is still sitting in the White House with his veto pen, the Pledge to America is going nowhere fast.

/the best Republicans can hope for, with control of the House, is to kill funding for the agenda the Democrats have already passed and try and starve it to death, which is certainly much better than a sharp stick in the eye
