Slum Wars

Well, Brazil has the World Cup and the Olympics coming up in a few years, the status quo can’t stand.

23 dead since Sunday in Brazil slum violence

Violence including clashes between police and drug gangs in the slums of Rio de Janeiro has killed 23 people since Sunday, with 188 people arrested or detained so far, military police said Thursday.

It was not immediately clear whether all the dead were gang members or whether civilians and police were among the fatalities.

The continuing unrest stems from the transfer of prisoners from local institutions to federal lockups in other states, the government-run Agencia Brasil news outlet reported, citing Rio de Janeiro Public Security Secretary Jose Mariano Beltrame. Some of the prisoners being transferred ordered the violence by drug gangs, Beltrame said.

Also factoring into the situation was a police effort to remove some drug gang members from Rio’s crime-ridden slums, called favelas.

This is what happens when the Government, ether purposely or through benign neglect, cedes control of state territory to enclaves and no go zones. Eventually, to avoid embarrassment and reestablish the law and order of the majority, the enclaves have to be retaken, and at great cost. It’s cheaper just to maintain law and order in the first place and not let these areas exist and fester.

Win Or Die

It sucks to be a North Korean soccer coach or player. Hell, it sucks to be a North Korean period.

Failed N Korean World Cup coach fears for life

Kim Jong-hun might well be envious of Dunga and Maradona, the two South American coaches sacked for their teams’ “poor” performance in the recent FIFA world cup. Kim, the North Korean coach, has not just been sacked, he has suffered public humiliation and been made to work unpaid as a construction worker. News leaks from Pyongyang further say that Kim fears he might soon be executed.

According to unconfirmed reports, the entire North Korean squad, which lost all three of its World Cup games in South Africa, has been subjected to a humiliating dressing-down in public.

The hapless players spent six hours being lectured in public, on their failure and ‘betrayal’ of Kim Jong-un, son and heir of the great leader Kim Jong-il.

They were subjected to a session of harsh ideological criticism, a Chinese businessman told the South Korean media.

Under coercion, every player blamed the defeat on the coach who has reportedly been expelled from the governing Workers Party.

North Korea’s success in qualifying for the Cup had prompted the Party to organize countrywide celebratory lectures in recognition of Kim Jong-un’s accomplishment.

Ever since the team crashed out, experts on the hermit state have speculated that the players would surely be punished.

Every day, more children are born in North Korea, facing a bleak, totalitarian future with no possible escape. Personally, I just can’t help but feel sorry for every last one of them.

/you know, ending the Korean War, once and for all, would eventually be viewed as the greatest humanitarian gesture in modern history

Mahmoud Versus The Sea Creature

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad took time out from his busy schedule of promising to destroy Israel to bad mouth Paul, the 100% accurate, World Cup match winner predicting octopus. Mahmoud must think that Paul the octopus is one of those dastardly Zionist sea creatures.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad attacks Octopus Paul

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Iranian leader, says Paul the Octopus, the sea creature that correctly predicted the outcome of World Cup games, is a symbol of all that is wrong with the western world.

He claims that the octopus is a symbol of decadence and decay among “his enemies”.

Paul, who lives at the Oberhausen Sea Life Centre, in Germany, won the hearts of the Spanish by predicting their World Cup victory.

He became an international star after predicting the outcome of all seven German World Cup matches accurately.

However, the Iranian president accused the octopus of spreading “western propaganda and superstition.” Paul was mentioned by Mr Ahmadinejad on various occasions during a speech in Tehran at the weekend.

“Those who believe in this type of thing cannot be the leaders of the global nations that aspire, like Iran, to human perfection, basing themselves in the love of all sacred values,” he said.

Lion, It’s What’s For Dinner

Phoenix restaurant, Il Vinaio, serves lion burgers for World Cup despite controversy

Will it leave you roaring for more?

A restaurant near Phoenix is hawking a $21 “lion burger” in celebration of the World Cup — despite the controversy the burger is causing.

Il Vinaio restaurant in downtown Mesa has already received a bomb threat and more than 250 angry e-mails from animal rights groups across the country.

“We thought that since the World Cup was in Africa … that the lion burger might be interesting for some of our more adventurous customers,” said owner Cameron Selogie.

The lions, he added, were raised at a free-range farm in Illinois that is regulated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

“Most of them, when we tell them the facts, that this is farm-raised and it doesn’t hurt the endangered animals, seem pretty reasonable,” Selogie said of the customers.

Il Vinaio ordered 10 pounds of lion meat and mixed it with ground beef. The burger comes with spicy homemade chips and roasted corn on the cob.

The restaurant said it plans to serve 30 burgers by Thursday. Lion meat is uncommon but not illegal, said a spokesman for the Agriculture Department.

The “animal rights activists” really need to get over their bad old hypocritical selves. It’s called a food chain and it pays to be at the top of it. Lions are large carnivores, think of all the thousands of poor little feed animals’ lives that these people are saving by eating the lions.

At World Cup, U.S. soccer coach Bob Bradley says disallowed score was ‘good goal’

To the thousands of U.S. supporters at Ellis Park and the millions back home watching Friday’s World Cup match between the United States and Slovenia, a clear injustice had been perpetrated. With no explanation as to why referee Koman Coulibaly had nullified Maurice Edu’s apparent go-ahead goal against Slovenia, rage rang out like a vuvuzela blaring inside a tollbooth.

Like everyone else, the U.S. team was incredulous and incensed. However, in the murky culture of soccer, where officiating decisions are rarely clarified during or after a match, Coach Bob Bradley took the mysterious call almost in stride.

“We’re all accustomed to the fact that, if it is an NFL playoff game and there is a call of some question, there will be a statement by the league from the referees. But FIFA operates differently,” Bradley, a New Jersey native, said of the sport’s international governing body on Saturday.

“Soccer is a different game. There are some aspects of it that are not made 100 percent clear, that seem to add to the discussion about the games. On our end, we get used to that. That’s just how it is sometimes, and then you move on and you get ready for the next game.”

Make no mistake: The U.S. delegation was grumbling after the final whistle of the 2-2 draw and, like many fans around the world, watched replays of the sequence dozens of times in search of answers. But because Coulibaly made a judgment call, FIFA guidelines do not offer a process to formally protest rulings made on the field.

Report: U.S.-Slovenia ref may be banned

According to a Yahoo! Sports report, World Cup referee Koman Coulibaly, whose unexplained call took away the United States’ go-ahead goal in the final minutes of Friday’s game vs. Slovenia, will face an expedited review and could be excluded from the rest of the World Cup.

The story credits a FIFA source as saying Coulibaly’s performance will be reviewed Saturday following a game in which replays showed he had some crucial missed calls and failed to control rough play.

“If he is found to have made a serious mistake, especially one that affected the outcome, then he would be highly unlikely to play any further part in the tournament,” said the source, who is close to senior figures on the refereeing panel. “FIFA is determined to keep refereeing standards high and does not want high-profile mistakes.”

Did the U.S. get robbed of the winning goal against Slovenia?

For the record, I am not a fan of introducing any type of instant replay into FIFA soccer. Part of the beauty of the game is that the time doesn’t stop, 45 minutes a half, straight through, without interruption. As for Koman Coulibaly, that was his first World Cup referee assignment and it damn well better be his last. He was horrible. However, banning Coulibaly from refereeing further World Cup games is no consolation for his monstrous mistake that may keep the U.S. from advancing.

/oh well, it is what it is, let’s just hope that we can beat Algeria on Wednesday and, for good measure, Slovenia beats or draws with England

Murder Okay, Watching Soccer, Not So Much

Here’s just another classic example of the utter depravity that is the sick and twisted religion of Islam.

Somali militants threaten World Cup TV viewers

Somali militants have threatened football fans they will be publicly flogged – or worse – if they are caught watching the World Cup on TV.

Gangs of Islamists are reported to be patrolling the areas they control looking for people watching games.

Dedicated fans are watching matches in secret, or in the few areas controlled by government forces.

On Saturday militants killed two people as they attacked a house where people were watching a game.

Militant group Hizbul-Islam also arrested 10 others at the house north-east of the capital Mogadishu where fans were watching the game between Argentina and Nigeria.

‘Mad men’

A spokesman for the group, Sheikh Mohamed Abdi Aros said the rest of Somalia should respect their ban on the World Cup.

“We are warning all the youth of Somalia not to dare watch these World Cup matches. It is a waste of money and time and they will not benefit anything or get any experience by watching mad men jumping up and down,” he said.

Okay then, watching soccer is a waste of money and time, but hunting down and murdering soccer fans, that’s Islamic productivity. Yeah, that make sense. Then again, Muslims kill people over cartoons in the name of Allah. Islam is an intrinsically violent religion, so it’s not really a surprise.

/the only marginally redeeming social value in preventing soccer fans from watching the World Cup is that it saves them from the incessant vuvuzela torture
