Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest 2011: Who Is to Blame for Its Popularity?

The 2011 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest was won by a familiar face, as it was Joey Chestnut taking home his fifth consecutive Mustard Belt. In 10 minutes, Chestnut finished off 62 hot dogs, six short of the world record he set in 2009.

No wonder they call him “Jaws.” His parents must be very proud.

As is always the case, there were plenty of people on hand to take in the scene at Coney Island, and many more took it in on ESPN. I haven’t found or heard any exact figures, but last year’s contest drew 40,000 spectators and was watched by nearly 1.7 million people on TV. One assumes those numbers only increased this year.

World Record Cat Noise

How’d you like to have to listen to this all day? I shudder to think what it might sound like if you accidentally stepped on its tail.

Smokey the loud purring cat aims for Guinness World Record

Smokey’s owner Ruth Adams hopes the moggy can be entered into the record books as the loudest purring domestic cat on the planet.

The 12-year-old moggy is 16 times louder than the average cat when she purrs, reaching 73 decibels.

‘Guinness has very strict criteria,’ said Mrs Adams, from Northampton, who enlisted specialist help from her local college for the record attempt.

. . .

The record attempt took place in Mrs Adam’s house and Smokey was recorded with equipment usually used by music professionals.

World Record Jesus

I’m not sure that this should be the object of competition but, apparently, it is.

Christ statue is worlds tallest

A HUGE statue of Jesus Christ — said to be the world’s tallest — has been put up in a small Polish town.

The controversial effigy stands at 33m (108ft), one metre for every year that Jesus lived, according to creator Reverend Sylwester Zawadzki.

With its gold crown, the white landmark is 36m (118ft) tall, and if the mound it stands on is also taken into account, it measures 51m (167ft).

Brazil’s famous Christ the Redeemer statue, the previous record holder, stands at 39.6m (130ft).

Mr Zawadzki, 78, the local priest in Swiebodzin, about 40 miles from the German border, said: “I have never been as happy as I am today.

“This is the culmination of my life’s work as a priest. I felt inspired to fulfil Jesus’ will, and today I give thanks to him for allowing me to fulfil his will.”

Some believe the £1million statue will bring more visitors to the area.

But others say the money would have been better spent elsewhere.

You never know what you’ll pull out of the river.

Missouri couple catch apparent world-record catfish

Greg Bernal of Florissant, Missouri, and girlfriend Janet Momphard of St. Charles, Missouri, on Tuesday hauled what is believed to be a world record catfish into their boat while fishing on the Missouri River.

The monster blue catfish weighed in at 130 pounds and was 45 inches in girth and 57 inches long, Dan Zarlenga, a spokesman for the Missouri Department of Conservation, said Tuesday.

“It hasn’t hit me yet. … I’m still in shock,” Bernal said Tuesday.

Bernal, 47, said he was about to call it a day when he decided to give it one last shot. “We threw the rod in, and about 30 minutes later, that rod took off,” he said. “I just put the pressure on him and tried to work him up towards the surface. His head broke the water and man, that was it, I knew I had a record breaker,” Bernal said.

Jim Blair, who keeps a state-certified scale at his feed store in New Melle, was notified Tuesday morning by the Missouri Department of Conservation that a couple may have caught a state record catfish and they needed to use his scale to get an official weight.

“My scale is inspected every year, it’s certified by the state,” said Blair.

Before the catfish was put on the scale, Momphard said it had to at least weigh more than 120 pounds, because it weighed more than the generator Bernal kept in the back of his truck.

“Him and his girlfriend were jumping up and down because when it went over 100 pounds, they knew they had a state record, but when it went up to 130 pounds, they was really excited,” said Blair.

“He’ll be considered royalty in the fishing world.”
