Al-Qaeda flag flies high on top of Benghazi courthouse

The black flag of al-Qaeda has been put on top of a courthouse in the Libyan city of Benghazi, further raising concerns that the country could turn into a Muslim extremist entity.

“There is no God but Allah” was written in Arabic on the flag raised above the streets of Benghazi, considered the heart of the Libyan revolutionaries who toppled Muammar Gaddafi’s regime.

South Carolina Woman Buys Wooden iPad for $180

A woman from South Carolina was looking to score a sweet deal on an iPad, but what she got instead was a block of wood with a photo of an iPad pasted to the top.

Ms. Ashley Mcdowell, from Spartanburg, South Carolina was purchasing dinner from a local McDonald’s when she was approached by two men in the parking lot, who wanted to sell her either an iPad or a laptop.

While showing her a brand new iPad, the men explained that they had purchased the iPads in bulk, and were now selling them for the discounted price of $300 from the trunk of their rimless Impala. McDowell explained that she only had $180 in cash with her, and the men generously agreed to accept the money.

The men handed her a Fed Ex box, and rather than checking it out at the scene, McDowell drove home. When she opened the box, she didn’t find an iPad – instead, she found a piece of wood that had been painted black and decorated with an Apple logo.

Two clichés that come readily to mind are, you get what you pay for and if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Awkward Disconnect, “Race” is a Genetically False Concept

Is black the ‘new black’?

Some compliments are hard to take.

Take, for example, Larry King’s announcement a day after President Obama’s inauguration that it is now “in” to be black.

In fact, the ageless CNN talk-show host announced during a conversation with journalist Bob Woodward and fellow talk-show host Tavis Smiley on “Larry King Live” that his 8-year-old son Cannon “now says that he would like to be black.”

Woodward and Smiley burst into what sounded like slightly cautious laughter. “There’s a lot of advantages to being black,” King continued, beaming with fatherly pride. “Black is in. Is this a turning of the tide?”

Not to me. As a black parent, I’ve lived through this movie, only in reverse racial roles. When our son was 4, he came home from preschool one day to announce that he wanted to be a “white policeman” when he grew up.

Anecdotally, as a Target cashier, years ago, during the Christmas rush, a mother tried desperately to convince her child to accept a “black Barbie” as opposed to a “white Barbie”. The mother even got help, took several minutes, but the kid was having none of “black” Barbie, and so the checkout proceeded.

Minorities, Race, and Genomics

DNA studies do not indicate that separate classifiable subspecies (races) exist within modern humans. While different genes for physical traits such as skin and hair color can be identified between individuals, no consistent patterns of genes across the human genome exist to distinguish one race from another. There also is no genetic basis for divisions of human ethnicity. People who have lived in the same geographic region for many generations may have some alleles in common, but no allele will be found in all members of one population and in no members of any other.
